2. Event/activity details
2.1 Activity title: Installing rain water collection tanks for Moera Community Garden
2.2 Description: We would like to add a rainwater collection tank behind the Community Hall for supplying the 14 beds we now have. A large enough tank will allow us to avoid using water from the tap behind the Hall. Currently we use this water at the largesse of Hutt City Property division. Should that change or if the water restrictions were imposed our gardens would suffer in the middle of summer.
In addition Hutt City Civil Defence has advised that they would welcome any additional water storage. A rainwater tank would support the ongoing development of the Moera Community Garden and contribute to local resiliency in the event of a Civil Defence emergency.
We have already received $250.00 from the Vogel Trust for a rainwater tank. This application is for the ancillary bits and pieces to connect it up.

2.4.2 How activity benefits community: Expanding the Moera Community Garden benefits include: · providing a means to promote healthy eating · providing an educational resource to be used by different groups, with specific opportunities to learn about growing food · encouraging community involvement · assisting in the empowerment of the community through active involvement in the development of the garden · encouraging communication and interaction between groups (eg. the elderly, schools and kindergartens, Maori, Pacific Island peoples, other immigrant communities and newcomers to Moera, and Health service providers) · providing opportunities for individual social interaction · encouraging pride and a sense of ownership and responsibility · raising the profile of Moera and create opportunities for positive media representation. · the therapeutic benefits of gardening as a healthy recreational activity · affordable, healthy food
2.4.3 Extent of community involvement in this activity (incl. planning, running, participating, financial support): The “core group” of roughly 10 local residents, plus new comers, will install the system with free support from Watersmart, a Paraparaumu based rainwater installation company. (6-8 hours) Ongoing maintenance (flushing the pipes) will be conducted by residents one a year.
2.4.4 How do we measure success: No need to “town” water through the summer. Greater numbers of people involved from more diverse backgrounds, more produce.
2.4.5 Accountability: Yes. Full details of our activities, including accounts, are posted at www.moera.org.nz with photos and videos!
